Important details & compliance
This is a price illustration, not an insurance contract. Premiums use each insurer's published rate schedule (Destination: Canada eff. Jan 13, 2025; GMS eff. Apr 15, 2025) and are estimates only. Coverage exists only after a completed application is accepted and the premium is paid, and is subject to each policy's eligibility, terms, limitations and exclusions.
Eligibility (summary): the insured must not be eligible for a Canadian Government Health Insurance Plan for this stay and must meet all eligibility questions on the insurer's application. This is emergency medical insurance — it covers sudden and unforeseen emergencies, not routine, follow-up or recurrent care. Age availability differs by insurer (e.g. GMS rates to age 79; Destination to 89).
Pre-existing conditions are covered only when stable for the insurer's required period before the effective date. Destination: 90 days (age 59−), 120 days (60-69), 180 days (70-79). GMS: stable pre-existing covered (no medical questions under 55). A "No pre-existing coverage" option does not cover any pre-existing condition.
Waiting period: generally waived when the policy is bought before arrival or before existing coverage expires with no gap; otherwise a 48-hour or 7-day waiting period may apply to new illnesses, per the insurer.
Super Visa: requires a Canadian emergency medical policy of at least $100,000 valid for 365 days (GMS qualifies at $100k or $150k). IRCC accepts the premium paid in full or in installments with a deposit — a quote is not accepted, so the policy must be issued and the deposit paid before applying. Monthly payment plans are offered by some insurers (e.g. 21st Century on 365-day policies of $100,000+; Destination on 180+ day policies of $50,000+) and usually involve a deposit plus a non-refundable set-up fee, so the yearly total is typically higher than paying in full. Family rate is 2× the oldest applicant's rate (conditions vary by insurer). Day count includes the arrival and departure days; age is taken as of the coverage start date. Minimum premiums and companion discounts follow each insurer's rules.
